About Kids Game Lab (KGL)

Colin Thom is a scientist and patent agent by training, as well as an avid board gamer and member of the Bay Area game design community. He has taught students from elementary through high school ages in settings including summer camps, after school programs, boy scout events, and private lessons. He believes that the best way to engage students is with activities they are already interested in, such as playing and making games!

The Bay Area has a thriving board game design community that includes game designers, artists, publishers, reviewers and playtesters. Many of us take joy in teaching. Kids Game Lab grew organically out of this community, as Colin developed KGL's game design curriculum with input and participation from other members of the community.

During the Covid outbreak, Colin adapted the KGL curriculum to a virtual format. Students can now design, playtest, and publish their game online in a number of formats. Check out our Curriculum lessons and resources and consider donating to KGL if you appreciate what we do!
